In Studyo, a section is an undividable group of students attending one course. For example, if students are not the same between semesters, you need one section for each semester.

You can add or modify your sections from SECTIONS in management mode. You can add new sections using the "+" button beside the search box.

You can modify the general details of a section by clicking the three vertical dots on its line and selecting "Edit details".

In both cases, you will see a dialog giving you access to general information about the section.

  • Locked: When checked, this section cannot get deleted by a subsequent data import operation, but still can change! Sections you create manually are locked by default. Sections created by an import operation aren't.

  • Import Identifier: A unique id that identifies this section in your SIS. This field is used by import operations to update existing sections or remove ones that are no longer found in the source data. When adding sections manually, you don't have to enter an id, but if you know it, it's good practice to set it.

  • Title: The title of the section, as it should appear in Studyo and Insights.

  • Short Title: A maximum of three characters that can quickly identify the section in areas of Studyo where space is limited. When empty, the first three letters of the title are used.

  • Grade Level: The grade level of the section. This field is used in assessment planning, when blocking the visibility of important tasks beyond a date. It doesn't have to contain a single number. It can be anything, like "9, 10", or "10-12", as long as you use a value that helps you regroup sections.

  • Section/Group Number: The group identifier of that section, which can be anything that can differentiate two groups of the same course.

  • Associated Group Number: This optional field can be used by students who use the onboarding code to join your school. It can help them quickly find all their sections by homeroom, for example.

  • Color: The default color used to represent periods in Studyo. Each student can later customize that color to their taste.

  • Default Teacher: The main teacher for that section.

  • Default Room Name: The default room for that section.

Auto-enrollment is a powerful feature that allows you to automatically enroll in the section all students, all teachers (yes, as if they were students), or students of specific grade levels.

To enroll all students or all teachers, open the "Roles" field and select each relevant role.

To only enroll students of specific grade levels, leave the "Roles" field empty. Instead click the "+" button on the "Tags (levels)" line and enter the grade level, repeating for each level.

Auto-enrolled sections are useful for communicating information to the whole school or specific levels, or for specialists who can work with many students. Teachers of those sections can publish tasks to the whole group, thus reaching all enrolled students (or teachers!) or publish to individual students.
